Where We Are Now
Once we got started, I turned my focus to STEM materials, as well as even more basic materials to create with. I wrote and received two grants--one through the Grinnell College Community Fund, and one from the Grinnell Newburg Education Foundation (GNEE). Both grants allowed me to buy around $3,000 worth of materials for the space.
Writing the grants opened the doors for extensive conversations with my principal about the maker space and its future. He added that there may be funds to buy materials with each year, in addition to those provided by the library. This will be especially helpful for replenishing consumable materials. The makerspace also gained enough attention to have additional funding from a granted gift to the school, as well as technology funds from the superintendent.
Check out my school library page for an up to date list of what is in our makerspace, as well as photos and ideas for student projects.
